our mission

Fighting isolation and spreading cheer,
one smile at a time.

Brighten A Day is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to fighting isolation and spreading cheer by connecting caring volunteers with seniors, hospitalized patients, and frontline workers. Through cards, letters, videos, conversations, and care packages, we remind people who feel alone that they are remembered, valued, and loved.

What We Stand For

Brighten A Day was founded by two students who believed ordinary people could do extraordinary things. We are entirely volunteer-run, with no paid employees, and we work with retirement homes, hospitals, orphanages, and other facilities to spread cheer to those in need.

mission

Lifting the spirits of those in need of cheer by sending them love, hope, and joy through cards, letters, gifts, conversations, video messages, devices, care packages, and more.

vision

People everywhere will have a reason to smile.

why this matters

The Loneliness Epidemic

Loneliness is a significant and urgent issue affecting many people today. Isolation and limited interaction with the outside world can take a toll on individuals mentally and physically.

According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, social isolation and loneliness can cause as much damage to health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Loneliness is linked directly to depression, anxiety, dementia, and heart conditions. Lonely individuals are more than 32% more likely to experience an early death (U.S. Surgeon General Advisory on Loneliness, 2023).

The number of individuals living alone has risen by 10% over the past decade. The elderly are particularly vulnerable, with 28% of older individuals living alone. At Brighten A Day, we aim to fight the loneliness epidemic by spreading cheer one day at a time.
